Based on a book by Tom Clancy, Rainbow Six is a game about a highly trained team of soldiers, 'Rainbow' meaning the actual team, and 'Six' meaning leader - you! In this game you must stealthily progress through 16 incredible levels to take out terrorists. That's about all the story of the game, but it's not really that important. Rainbow Six is one of the most exciting and in depth games around, and the gameplay really brings out the stealth in you.
As is always the case its your job to lead a group of trained soldiers (from different countries of the United Nation). During briefings you have to listen very carefully to mission objectives, and ultimately execute them with pinpoint accuracy.
You have to play a series of well-designed missions, but before you can get into the game, you must first look at the mission objectives and decide your mission startegy. If you're into expertly pinpointing enemy weaknesses and planning your mission route to the last detail then Rainbow Six one of the best games around to do that. But if you just want to just get there and shoot everything that moves then this isnt really the game for you. Although you can go though the game without planning anything and using default plans.
You can decide the way points for each member of your team to go by when you are playing the game, and you can choose which of the highly trained soldiers (mercanaries) you want in your team. You can give them any weapon from a large arsenal, including guns , grenades, bomb defusers and many others. You can even kit out your team with different camoflague gear depending on your terrain.
In this game it wont help running into a terrorist infested room, guns blazing and know you will kill everyone inside. If you do that, before you know it the hostage is dead along with half your team and you've failed your mission. In this game stealth is everything. If you kill a terrorist and his mate sees him dying (even from the otherside of the complex) he will raise the arm and the place will be crawling with terrorists on the look out for you. This game is all about 'one shot one kill'. Stalk your prey and kill him/her before they even see you and make sure no one else is around if you can help it.
The graphics in Rainbow Six are very good for a game of this depth, you have to zoom most of the time to see what you are shooting. They are clear, crisp, and very realistic and atmospheric, even though the engine is not top of the range. But that wont matter if you have a half decent 3D graphics card.
You can play multiplayer Rainbow Six on the net at places like (mplayer) gamespy.com, battle.net and zone.com. In my opinion these are only worth it if you have a fast internet connection. You can just about play with a 56k modem but anything under that and you will lag and be easily picked off by other players. You can play Rainbow Six with upto 15 other people (only with very fast connection). Playing Rainbow Six multiplayer is great fun especially when you play something like 3 vs 3 or 4 vs 4, jsut make sure you dont frag your own team mates :)
