Ghost World

Misfit teens crave independence and excitement but end up dulling everything around them. Very witty, definately worth a watch.

Ghost World
Directed by Terry Zwigoff

Screenplay: Daniel Clowes

Cast: Thora Birch, Scarlett Johansson, Steve Buscemi, Brad Renfro, Illeana Douglas

Ghostworld is one of those films that will be considered classic in a year or two's time when the non cinema going public watch this film on video or TV. It has a good cast in Steve Buscemi and Thora Birch (American Beauty), and some good supporting roles. Based on an underground "comic" book of the same name, the film explores the relationship between a disaffected recently graduated high school girl (Enid/Thora Birch) and a quirky older man (Steve Buscemi) who collects old 78rpm records and is a sad character in life.

The story starts at a high school graduation ceremony, thats where you meet the two teenagers Rebecca and Enid. They are the modern teens- revolted by the cheesy, fake world and with their boring peers and parents. The girls are witty, at times really cruel (using acutely realistic dialogue) but they are ultimately lost and broken.

I'm not going to go into the story too much simply because there is so much going on. The relationship with Buscemi is sweet and tender complete with inter-generational sex, but their relationship is more about a couple of misfits finding their way in the world than anything else.

This is the first release from John Malkovich’s production company, Mr. Mudd. Being his company we should have expected something quirky and different and we got it.

In conclusion this is a teen comedy of startling sophistication. A true original, with sharp humour, subtle detail and painfully realistic characters. No wonder this film is generating a good buzz.
